King of the Wild

The history of Wildland

Wildland, a continent like no human has ever laid eyes on. Here the true magic of nature is still alive. It’s populated by all kinds of animals and thanks to its wide range of climate zones, every creature feels at home here. But darkness overshadows Wildland these days. After the death of King Leo IV here has been no peace and the whole country has descended into chaos. In addition, King Leo’s son has vanished on his quest to find a remedy for his father’s sickness. The once unified country broke apart into many small territories and everywhere animals are fighting to gain the upper hand.

Just like in the summerwoods. Here the contestants Bruce, Gustav, Nuttz and Sly are fighting to control the area. Because of its central location and its fertile grounds, the summerwoods have always been an important part of the kingdom. There are whispers that quite a few animals from all corners of Wildland are on their way to the summerwoods, each for their own reasons. Some want to grow their influence, others are hoping for peace and some are just looking for a challenge. A few of them might even team up to reach their goals. Whatever their reasons may be, power, riches or peace, the creature who wins the battle can henceforth call themselves King of the Wild.

Characters

Many of the animals in Wildland are fighting for territories, but only a few contest for the title of king. The ones that do are listed here. Dive into their backstory, explore their play style and learn about their strengths and weaknesses. Everyone you see here is playable in the game.

Bruce

Animal: Bear
Role: Tank
Difficulty : Easy

Bruce is the bear with the foulest mood you have ever met. Sullenly, he walks through the woods, bashing everyone who is stupid enough not to get out of his way. Violence is always an option for him. Basically, he isn’t interested in anyone else, as long as they don’t get on his nerves. Unfortunately it doesn’t take much for that. Existing is often already enough. In the game, Bruce takes on the role of a tank, so he can take quite a lot of damage without being kicked out. Additionally, he can also cause a considerable amount of damage. One of Bruce’s biggest disadvantages is his limited mobility, which makes it difficult for him to follow his opponents. If you like causing and taking a lot of damage, Bruce is the perfect choice for you.

Gustav

Animal: Moose
Role: Pusher
Difficulty: Medium

Gustav is a real speed-fanatic. He will challenge you to a race at every opportunity. But even though he is very ambitious in a race, he is a kind and friendly moose. He helps where he can and always supports his friends in need. Sometimes his support means lending an open ear, sometimes lending hooves and antlers in a fight, which is how he has proven himself a force to be reckoned with. As a pusher, Gustav uses this ability in the game to push opponents back. For this, the right angle and lots of momentum are essential. If Gustav succeeds in targeting an opponent from the right direction, that’s it for them. But if they keep close to him or take care to never stand between him and the closest edge of the board, his abilities are a lot weaker. If you like watching your opponents sail through the air, then you should definitely choose Gustav.

Nuttz

Animal: Squirrel
Role: Fighter
Difficulty: Easy

Originally, Nuttz was a pretty average squirrel. Until, one day, she fell off a tree and hurt her head pretty badly. From then on Nuttz was convinced to be a veteran of the third squirrel-war. For her, everyone is an enemy or spy and she doesn’t even trust her best friends anymore. That’s why she now pelts everyone who comes too close with nuts, shrieking wildly. In the game, Nutts barely does anything else. As a fighter, she jumps across the board and throws nuts at her  opponents. Her big advantage is her increased range. The strength of single attacks however is relatively weak and she can only cause serious damage in a full-on nut-volley. Once the opponent has reached her, she is likely to be defeated in direct combat. If you like throwing things at people, you should definitely try Nuttz.

Sly

Animal: Fox
Role: Trickster
Difficulty: Medium

There’s something every child in the forest learns before they can walk: Never trust Sly the vixen! Watch your back in Sly’s territory! Naughty children will be taken by Sly! But are the stories about Sly just cautionary tales, or is there some truth to them? Well, it’s hard to say, because Sly is a mistress of deception. You think you have just seen her on the other side of the river, when suddenly there is a paw across your mouth and you hear her sweet voice whispering in your ear while she skillfully rids you of your belongings or slits your throat. You never know what will happen when she’s around. It’s the same in the game. As a trickster, Sly can save herself from tricky situations by disappearing into thin air and then reappear to overthrow her opponents from behind. Correct timing is crucial, however; if her attacks come at the wrong time, they might not be as effective or even miss their mark completely. If you like tricking your enemies (or friends), Sly the shifty vixen is a perfect fit for you.

The Game

In King of the Wild, the players are trying to push each other off the board to become the sole ruler of the forest. To achieve that, each player chooses one character they want to play. Each character comes with a miniature, a character board/sheet and a special deck of cards. This deck can be adjusted before the game starts. During their turns, players move across the board and use actions or attacks to try and push other players’ miniatures over the edge of the board. The attacks can cause damage or thrust other players back, and the intensity of the thrust is enhanced by previously caused damage. With reaction cards, players can react to actions and attacks and thus thwart other players’ potentially devastating turns. As soon as one player manages to push another player out of the forest (off the board), they are rewarded one point. The player that was kicked out removes all the damage they suffered and places their miniature in the starting area of the board. The game is over as soon as one player has scored a certain amount of points. The game is for 2-4 players from about 10 years old and upwards.
